Banana – An Ayurvedic Perspective

Ayurvedic Nutrition is a part of Ayurveda which is little known in general .. However Ayurvedic Nutrition is a science which is very effective for preventing and managing several disorders . Ayurvedic Nutrition is based on the Premise that foods  , like human beings also have certain impact on the human body which varies from one person to another .
Banana in Ayurvedic Nutrition has the following properties :

Its taste ( rasa ) is sweet ,Hence banana can be given in all cases where a sweet taste is required , for example in making foods for children , or when people desire eating something sweet . It is one of the commonest items in religious offerings  .

Its energy  ( Veerya ) is  cooling , hence this is frequently given after a workout and in cases of acidity and ulcers . In fact it also has another quality , which is called a demulcent effect . This is very useful for ulcer and acidity patients  . ( it has a quick impact , in the case of an acid attack )

Its post digestive energy ( Vipaka ) is sour , which means  that despite being sweet to taste initially , after consuming the impact on the body is the same as a sour food . This is the reason that it leads to an increase in weight if consumed in large quantities , as a sour impact after digestion increases the elements of water in our body .

Its Post digestive impact ( prabhaav ) is channel blocking , it increases the mucous , so it is not recommended in cases of phlegm disorders and also not recommended at night . It is best avoided in cases of  accumulated toxins in the body , for example arthritis

Its property is “ Guru Guna “ which means heavy characteristic , which means it is ideal for people suffering from weakness and weak muscles . People who are very lean and find it difficult to gain weight can benefit from a combination of banana and Dates ( khajur ) on the body .Another Combination for a healthy weight gain is – Banana , plus figs ( anjeer ) , plus honey . This combination is far better than consuming burgers and pizzas for weight gain , as fast foods only contribute to indigestion and illness and rarely cause a balanced weight gain in very lean people  .

Use of Banana in disorders –

1- In case of loose motions , one can give single  banana . This helps to bind the stools .

2- In case of constipation accompanied with dryness ,2 bananas should be given along with a decoction of honey and ginger .Also regular intake of Aloe vera juice is advised .

3- In case of dry cough with pain , banana can be given along with a glass of hot water with black pepper and honey.

4- Banana stem is used in kidney disorders

Banana is rich in potassium , calcium , magnesium , iron , zinc , Vitamin A , Vitamin B ,Vitamin C

Hence it is useful in managing high blood pressure ( as it is rich in potassium , which lowers blood pressure )

It is Good for skin applications in the form of a face pack

It is good for people with weak reproductive systems .
